28th October - Travelling to Berlin from Cottbus. Going to Columbia Halle to attend the Dave Matthews band. This sketch was drawn on the RE 2 from Cottbus to Lichtenberg.

Schlolsskirche, Cottbus

I recently started studying Urban Design at the Brandenburg Technical University based in a small and quaint town of Cottbus, around an hour from Berlin. I am keeping open and sucking in the experience. A few days back I finally had the chance to pick up my sketchbook and explore the city. Here is what I drew;

This sketch if of Schlolsskirche (the castle church), which as the name suggests was a church, which was converted to a Synagogue last year. This conversion is the first in the state of Brandenburg since 1938. It gives me goosebumps to see structures that have witnessed history.

Brown : People and Places I

A dear friend of mine recently gifted me a sketchbook she bought from Indonesia. Now since the two most popular things in Indonesia are the cinnamon cigarettes and batik, it seemed normal for them to wrap the sketchbook in beautiful batik print. The sketchbook has brown recycled paper, which makes it even more interesting to use. The rough grains of the paper make it an apt medium to sketch on with a pencil. Though, I am uploading a few sketches I made with my pen recently. There are more sketches which I will upload eventually.

Sketching Workshop with Sebastian Loerscher

A week back, our office (MOD Institute) in collaboration with NextHamburg and Goethe Institut, Bangalore organized a crowd sourcing exhibition NextBangalore Gatishil for the citizens of Bangalore. A part of the exhibition was a week long sketching workshop for the citizens of Bangalore. The workshop was conducted by Sebastian Loerscher, a very able illustrator and an awesome friend. This workshop comes after three years of his book "Making Friends in Bangalore", which he produced the first time he was in Bangalore.

Without talking about it further, here are some pictures from the workshop, followed by my sketches done during the workshop. Enjoy!

One Minute One Sketch

Following the advice given by one of the more mature sketchers on the Urban Sketchers (*.org) blog, I set out making sketches while not giving each one more than one minute. I also experimented on people which I hardly draw. The exercise was enriching and felt really free. Plan to keep repeating this. Plus I ended up with so many sketches!!

Gokarna

Me and some 12 other friends went to Gokarna, a temple town in Karnataka last month. I really didn't get any time to sketch there, but for this one. Cheers!

Capela du Monde, Old Goa.
This chapel sits on top of a hill in Old Goa and has one of the most beautiful views of Goa. In front one can see the rest of the monuments of Old Goa, and then as the eye drifts, one can see Ribandar, Panjim and Betim. Post sun sets (which is also a spectacle) one can even see the Aguada lighthouse. Then on the right hand side sit the islands of Chorao and Divar. This chapel, is in short, a blissful place. I sketched these last December I think. Enjoy!

A week in Delhi

9th and 10th of this month were an off in office for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which is celebrated with vigor in this part of the country. Hence, I saw this opportunity to go home to meet family and finish some important chores back home. In the meantime, I got some time to sketch when I was out with a few friends. I went to Nizamuddin Basti one fine morning. It was more than sunny and a good day to sketch. I didn't plan to sketch on the trip though. I just wanted to see the monuments in the Nizamuddin Basti, which sadly, I always had neglected. This time around as well, I could only see a masjid, the main Nizamuddin Dargah and mosque, Mazar-e-Ghalib, and the Nizamuddin Baoli. There is still a lot to explore in the Basti and I plan to go there again.

I only sketched the Mazar-e-Ghalib (the grave of the most famous poet of Delhi) and the Subz Burj, which stands on the traffic island on one of the Mathura Rd. intersections. The reason why Nizamuddin area is full of tombs and memorials, is because most of the folklore, whether it be the Mughal emperor Humayun (Humayun's Tomb), or a barber (search Nai ka Gumbad) wanted to be buried as close to the Sufi Saint (Hazrat Nizamuddin) as possible. Therefore, creating a sort of necropolis. All in all, this place is a must visit.

Back to Goa

Sketching Indoors, Raining Outdoors

Uggghh.. I've never hated rains so much. That's also because I've never lived in an area before where it rains continuously. Therefore, I had limited options of sketching and being an architecture student, I was never interested in sketching indoors. I have always preferred sketching outdoors or architectural details.

Although, one has to satisfy the urge to sketch. I didn't make very many sketches. I only did one in watercolor and ink. On a rainy day, I was giving company to a friend of mine, who was waiting for a friend of hers, in Tea Cafe right after office hours. It was there that I sketched the spoon stand and the napkin holder, both done in ceramics, which are a very common site here in Goa. Spare me if its not very well done. This is very unusual for me.

It is now after some two months of moving to Goa that the rains spare us during the day (yes it still rains at night). I plan to go to Old Goa this weekend to sketch. Here is the sketch. Enjoy.
