Sketching Workshop with Sebastian Loerscher

A week back, our office (MOD Institute) in collaboration with NextHamburg and Goethe Institut, Bangalore organized a crowd sourcing exhibition NextBangalore Gatishil for the citizens of Bangalore. A part of the exhibition was a week long sketching workshop for the citizens of Bangalore. The workshop was conducted by Sebastian Loerscher, a very able illustrator and an awesome friend. This workshop comes after three years of his book "Making Friends in Bangalore", which he produced the first time he was in Bangalore.

Without talking about it further, here are some pictures from the workshop, followed by my sketches done during the workshop. Enjoy!

Thank you Sebastian, for being a lovely friend!

Cheers!

Cave Temples of Badami and Aihole

Back in July, I went for a backpacking trip through Hampi, Badami and Bijapur. Due to limited budget, I had to cut down the duration significantly, although, it was an unadulterated first hand rendezvous with information. I went to Hampi first, then Bijapur, followed by Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal and back to Goa. During the last leg of my trip, I visited a lot of cave temples.

Now I had forgotten my charcoal so I decided to sketch the plans of the cave temples. I sketched a lot during the trip, although only a few sketches turned out good. Lack of practice I believe. More sketches from Hampi and Bijapur in the next post.

Regards.

Gokarna

Me and some 12 other friends went to Gokarna, a temple town in Karnataka last month. I really didn't get any time to sketch there, but for this one. Cheers!

2014.02

Capela du Monde, Old Goa.
This chapel sits on top of a hill in Old Goa and has one of the most beautiful views of Goa. In front one can see the rest of the monuments of Old Goa, and then as the eye drifts, one can see Ribandar, Panjim and Betim. Post sun sets (which is also a spectacle) one can even see the Aguada lighthouse. Then on the right hand side sit the islands of Chorao and Divar. This chapel, is in short, a blissful place. I sketched these last December I think. Enjoy!

Old Goa

Old Goa, has a plethora of old structures and all of them have been competing in the race of most sketchable monuments since the time they were constructed. I went to Old Goa on 15th of this month to try my luck. I wanted to try out a different medium, therefore, I used a chiseled black marker with a 3mm tip. It was enough to give bold strokes, yet the effect was graceful. I was tired of adding detail with a small nib and thought that this was the apt medium to sketch with.

I sketched two monuments to start with. The first one was the  St. Peters Church (on the way to Old Goa), and the other one was the Chapel of St. Catherine. I chose a conventional view for the St. Peters Church (drew the cross in the foreground and the chapel in the background) and I chose an unconventional view for the Chapel of St. Catherine (I sketched the back facade and the perspective was a bit tricky. The slopes were aligned with the vanishing points). I messed up the second sketch a bit (the perspective and the ground to structure relationship), but I was still happy with the new medium I was using. The results were better than a pencil. Here are the sketches.
